Given that there was also water from the raw water pump, it was difficult to judge how much oil had leaked out - perhaps 100-200ml? There is no obvious leaks, but given that the bilge slopes, it is evident that the leak comes somewhere from the front of the engine (ie the other end from the propshaft/gearbox). Generally speaking, most small engines like a Perkins 4108 are SAE 5, engines from 60 to 80 HP like a Continental F163 or Perkins 4236 are usually SAE 4 or 3, and engines above 150 HP, such as a Perkins 6354 or Perkins 1006T series, are usually SAE 2 or larger. This valve closes the bypass port as the thermostat opens. 'Certain engine applications have an external bypass which incorporates a thermostat with a bypass blanking valve. During our short shake-down trip I noticed that the raw water pump was dripping water however after the trip I discovered that there was a fair amount of oil in the engine bilge. There is a note in the mnaual for the 4.108 which says to make sure the correct type of thermostat is fitted. We took her out for the first time in our ownership today (very exciting!).
Simply install the engine and get out on the open water. Our recently acquired Oyster 406 is fitted with a Perkins 4108. If youre after something to instantly upgrade your boat, then go for a full Perkins 4108 engine.
